Dungtse Lhakhang
Brief Background

The temple is very unique as it's in the form of chorten, that's Stupa and there are only a few temples in such form. It is just a few minute's walks or drives from Paro main town.

It was built in 1421 by famous Tibetan saint Drubthop Tangthong Gyelpo who is also known as Chagzampa "The Iron Chian Bridge Builder". He has built the temple in the form of chorten to subdue the demon who was terrorizing Paro valley.

This temple was restored in 1841 by 25th Je Khenpo Sherab Gyestshen and all the villages contributed. Even the wall paintings were restored at that time. And was also restored again by Royal Grand mother Ashi Kesang Choden which was completed in 2019. 

Inside Dungtse Lhakhang

The ground floor contains the five buddhas of meditation, and also Avalokiteshvara, Tara, and Guru Rinpoche. And also can see the painting of Thangthong Gyelpo founder of this temple and various forms of Kubera.

The outer wall of the second floor shows the form of Mahakala and the interior wall has the painting of Bardo, the intermediate stage between death and the next life.

On the exterior wall of the third floor you will see the paintings of Cakrasamvara, Vajrabhairava, Kalacakra, Hevraj, Guyasamaja, Hayagriva, Mahamaya, etc, and on the interior walls, you will see the Eight Four Indian saints, Mahasiddhas who were not into religious life but were the first to receive Tantric teaching. And also you will see the Tibetan saints who obtained the teachings from Mahasiddhas and who were the origin of Kagyupa schools, Marpa, Milarepa, Gampapo.

Open: Every day from 08:00 to 17:00 in summer and 08:00 to 16:00 in winter.

Lunch Break: 13-14 hrs

Dress Code: Need formal dress

Entry Fee: Nu. 1000 (Roughly USD 12)

Photography: Photography is allowed till courtyard
